How to Approach Event Week

Event week is not the time to push for new gains. It is the moment to consolidate, recover, and prepare mentally and physically to perform at your best.

Whether you are gearing up for a Hyrox competition or a big running race, here is how to approach the week leading up to the event.

Training

This week the focus shifts from building fitness to fine tuning it. You will experience a drop in volume while keeping intensity where it counts. Think of it as sharpening the axe. Reduce the load but maintain the effort in your workouts. Your sessions should feel familiar and designed to keep your body primed without overloading it.

Incorporate low intensity, Zone Two conditioning to keep your system active. Remember that this is not the week to make major improvements. The hard work has already been done. Now, prioritize recovery, reduce inflammation, and allow your body to rest so it can perform on race day.

Nutrition

Nutrition during event week should remain stable. Avoid any drastic changes in your diet. Keep your carbohydrate and protein intake high to support your energy levels and recovery. On event day, stick with what you have practiced during training. For example, a balanced pre event meal might include oatmeal with banana and a scoop of protein or a whole grain bagel with lean turkey and a side of fruit.

Choose foods that you know digest well and provide steady energy. If you use supplements such as branched chain amino acids or caffeine, time them as you have trained with them. Consistency is key because you want your body to be familiar with your fuel and not surprised by new foods or timings.

Mentality

Your mental state is as important as your physical readiness. Enter event week with confidence in your preparation. Stick to your normal routine and avoid trying anything new. Prioritize sleep above all else because quality rest is the foundation of recovery and performance.

If you tend to feel anxious before events, have a few strategies in place to keep yourself calm. This might include a short meditation session, listening to your favorite music, or practicing deep breathing exercises. The goal is to feel relaxed and focused while enjoying the culmination of your hard work.
